ARRI ALEXA Mini Announcement

Not to be outdone, The ARRI ALEXA Mini Announcement comes just days after the Red announces their new camera the Weapon (read full article here). Both companies continue to push forward digital filmmaking.

arri-mini-moviThe Mini will be a a smaller, lighter version of their popular Alexa camera in a carbon-fiber body. It will be equipped with a Super 35mm format ARRI ALEV III CMOS sensor with a titanium PL mount. Shipping is expected to start in May 2015 and the cost is estimated to be $36,000 to $45,000 US dollars.

The Mini is being promoted as a versatile additional tool in the ALEXA family that perfectly complements their ALEXA and eliminates the need of working with third-party cameras for specialized shots. The Compact, lightweight design will allow the Mini to be used with gimbal systems, drones and underwater housing, which is currently dominated by the Red Epic Dragon.

The Mini can record in 4:3 or 16:9 and is capable of up to 200fps 2K ProRes or 30fps 2.8K ArriRAW recording on an CFast 2.0 cards. Frame rates range from .75 -200fps. And a built-in set of motorized ND filters as well as wireless control.

The ARRI ALEXA Mini is scheduled to begin shipping in May 2015, with orders being taken from March. A prototype of the ALEXA Mini will be on show at the Broadcast Video Expo (BVE) from February 24-26, 2015, in Booth J30.
